Real Madrid vs Inter Preview: Mourinho, Chivu and a 59-Year Wait in Madrid

8 September 2026 · UEFA Champions League, League Phase Matchday 1 · Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid

The 2026/27 Champions League league phase opens with the heaviest fixture on the calendar. Real Madrid host Inter at the Santiago Bernabéu — the 20th meeting between two clubs who have spent six decades trading European Cups. José Mourinho faces the side he took to a treble on this very pitch in 2010, and opposite him stands Cristian Chivu, one of the players who made that treble happen. Madrid arrive off their first defeat of the season; Inter arrive on the back of a comeback that will either galvanise them or leave them flat.

Two Teams Arriving From Opposite Emotions

Real Madrid's season had been smooth until Friday. A front line of Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham went to Real Betis on LaLiga matchday four and lost 1-0, Mourinho's first defeat since returning to the Spanish capital. Nobody in Madrid is panicking over ninety minutes in Seville, but the familiar structural questions resurfaced immediately: how this side defends transitions, and what happens to the midfield when three of its most useful pieces are unavailable.

Inter, by contrast, could not have asked for a better send-off. Trailing 2-0 at home to Napoli with forty minutes left in Serie A matchday three, Chivu's side scored three times — Lautaro Martínez on 56 minutes, a Marcus Thuram header on 82, and Lautaro again in stoppage time — to win 3-2. They finished the night with 29 shots and an expected-goals figure of 3.19. Lautaro's double also took him to 134 Serie A goals for the club, third on Inter's all-time list behind Giuseppe Meazza and Benito Lorenzi. It is now fifteen matches without defeat in all competitions.

Real Madrid have won each of the last four meetings, all in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 group stages. Inter's most recent victory in the fixture came at the San Siro in November 1998, and their last win at the Bernabéu was 2-0 in the 1966/67 European Cup quarter-final on 1 March 1967 — fifty-nine years ago. The all-time record across nineteen matches in every competition reads 10 wins for Real Madrid, 2 draws and 7 wins for Inter; in the Champions League era alone it is 7-1-5 to the Spanish side, with 16 goals scored against 13.

Four Things to Watch in Madrid

1. Madrid's midfield is down to the bare bones

This is not one absentee, it is eight. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are all serving red-card suspensions carried over from Real Madrid's final Champions League appearance of 2025/26. On top of that, Aurélien Tchouaméni is nursing a muscle problem, Éder Militão a hamstring, Endrick and Raúl Asencio muscle injuries, Rodrygo a knee injury and Thiago Pitarch a knee issue, with Ferland Mendy not registered in the European squad at all and Andriy Lunin ill. Federico Valverde goes from being one option among many to being the fixed point everything else rotates around.

2. Mbappé is two goals from fifth on the all-time list

The Frenchman has scored 22 Champions League goals in 25 appearances for Real Madrid, and two against Inter would move him past Raúl into fifth place on the competition's all-time scoring chart. He also arrives with four LaLiga goals already banked this season and a point to prove after a wasteful night in Seville. Against a back three that likes to step out, his movement off the shoulder of Alessandro Bastoni is the clearest route to a goal on the pitch.

3. Chivu's back three versus a patched-up front line

Inter have kept their 3-5-2 shape through three league rounds, with Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni in front of Josep Martínez, and Federico Dimarco and Andy Diouf providing the width. The Napoli comeback came from the bench as much as the starting eleven — Thuram, Carlos Augusto and Curtis Jones all entered on 62 minutes and changed the game. With Madrid's right side likely to feature Denzel Dumfries against his former club, that flank is where the match could be decided.

4. The schedule means this is not do-or-die — and that matters

Under the league-phase format, one defeat in eighteen points of fixtures changes very little. Opta's fixture-difficulty model rates Inter's draw as the second softest in the competition, and they are widely expected to finish inside the top eight and skip the play-off round entirely. That freedom cuts both ways: Inter can play without fear, but Madrid know a home win against a direct rival for the top eight is worth more in February than it looks in September.

Predicted Lineups

Real Madrid

4-2-3-1
  • Courtois
  • Dumfries, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella
  • Valverde, Bellingham
  • Diomandé, Díaz, Vinícius Júnior
  • Mbappé

Camavinga, Güler and Silva are suspended; Tchouaméni, Militão, Endrick, Asencio, Rodrygo, Pitarch and Lunin are all doubtful or out, and Mendy is not in the European squad. Yan Diomandé could be handed a first start.

Inter

3-5-2
  • Josep Martínez
  • Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni
  • Diouf, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Carlos Augusto, Dimarco
  • Thuram, Lautaro Martínez

Chivu has almost a full squad to choose from. Djed Spence is yet to make his debut because of a calf problem and Spinacce is also unavailable; otherwise the group that beat Napoli is intact.

Key Battle: Dimarco Against Dumfries

Inter's whole attacking structure runs through Federico Dimarco. He takes the ball high on the left, delivers from the byline and, as Napoli discovered, strikes a dead ball well enough to hit the crossbar from range. If Madrid play Denzel Dumfries at right back — the Dutchman facing the club he left in the summer — then Dimarco is asked to do his best work against a player who knows exactly how Inter's back three defends crosses.

The reverse is equally true. Madrid's left side has been their most reliable route to goal all season, and Vinícius Júnior's three goal involvements have largely come from combinations down that channel. Whoever wins the flank battle will decide whether this becomes a Madrid siege or an Inter counter-attacking exercise, and with both sides carrying real goal threat in transition, neither can afford to push both full-backs on at once.

FAQ

What time does Real Madrid vs Inter kick off?
21:00 CEST on Tuesday 8 September 2026 at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. That is 20:00 in the UK, 19:00 GMT, and 03:00 China Standard Time on 9 September.
How many times have these two clubs met?
This is the 20th meeting in all competitions. Across the previous 19, Real Madrid hold 10 wins to Inter's 7, with 2 draws. In the Champions League era specifically the record is 7 wins for Real Madrid, 1 draw and 5 wins for Inter, with 16 goals scored to 13.
Who is missing through injury or suspension?
Real Madrid are without suspended trio Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva, plus injured Aurélien Tchouaméni, Éder Militão, Endrick, Raúl Asencio, Rodrygo and Thiago Pitarch; Ferland Mendy is not registered for the competition and Andriy Lunin is ill. Inter's only real absentee is Djed Spence, who has a calf problem.
When did Inter last win at the Bernabéu?
Not since 1 March 1967, when they won 2-0 in the European Cup quarter-final second leg. Inter have lost their last four matches against Real Madrid in all competitions, with their last victory of any kind in the fixture coming at the San Siro in November 1998.
Who is favourites?
Most models lean towards Real Madrid, reflecting home advantage and a rating gap of roughly 165 points on Glicko-2. Inter's fifteen-match unbeaten run and Madrid's lengthy absence list narrow it considerably, and a score draw is a popular prediction among analysts.
Prediction. Two stresses pull against each other here. Madrid have won four straight in this fixture and Mbappé is chasing a place in the all-time top five, but eight absentees — three of them suspensions — strip Mourinho of the midfield control that makes his teams awkward to play against. Inter are unbeaten in fifteen, have a settled back three and just scored three in forty minutes from two goals down. This looks like goals at both ends rather than a stalemate: Real Madrid 2-1 Inter, with the away side's counter-attack the likeliest source of an equaliser if Madrid's makeshift midfield loses its shape after the hour.
