Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview: Carrick's First Derby Against Maresca's Perfect Start

The 199th Manchester derby arrives with both dugouts new. Michael Carrick takes charge of his first Manchester United against Manchester City side, and across the touchline Enzo Maresca is preparing for his first taste of it as City head coach. United have taken four points from three league matches and sit 11th. City have won all three, lead the table on nine points, and have conceded twice all season. A derby at Old Trafford rarely needs extra narrative, but this one has it in both technical areas.

Three Games, Two Very Different Starts

United’s league season so far reads like a team still locating itself. They opened with a 5-2 comeback win at home to Ipswich Town, then lost 2-0 at newly promoted Hull City, then drew 2-2 at Everton after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. Seven goals scored is a respectable return; six conceded in three matches is not, and it is the defensive column that will worry Carrick most going into this one.

There was a much-needed lift in midweek: a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah, in which Benjamin Šeško scored again after a long shin problem. Carrick has spoken about the striker’s improving fitness, and having a centre-forward trending upward changes the shape of what United can threaten with. Marcus Rashford missed that game but is expected to be available for the derby.

City, meanwhile, have simply won every league match they have played: 2-1 against Bournemouth, 4-1 away at Crystal Palace, and 1-0 at home to Coventry City. Add the 2-0 Champions League win at Porto and Maresca’s side have kept four clean sheets in their last four outings in all competitions. Erling Haaland has scored in each of his first three league games and added two more in Portugal; he has taken 14 shots in the league, eight of them on target.

Head-to-Head: The Recent Meetings

United hold the advantage in the all-time series across all competitions, but the last few years have been far tighter. Of the last six meetings in all competitions, United have won three, City two, and one finished level. The most recent of them is the one United supporters will cite: a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in January 2026, when City arrived with a makeshift, inexperienced back line and were picked off.

City’s last visit to Old Trafford ended in that 2-0 defeat. Maresca will not want a repeat, and his squad arrives considerably more settled at the back than the one that turned up in January.

Four Things to Watch

1. United’s centre-backs against the league’s in-form striker

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez are the likely pairing, with Matthijs de Ligt still short of full fitness despite having resumed training. Against a forward who has scored in every league round so far and has put eight of fourteen shots on target, that is the matchup that decides the afternoon. United have already conceded six in three league games; this is a considerable step up in quality of opponent.

2. Bruno Fernandes against a single pivot

Fernandes has three goals and one assist from three league appearances and has created eight chances, which makes him United’s primary creative route by a distance. City are expected to line up with Elliot Anderson as the lone holding midfielder in front of the back four. If United can get Fernandes receiving between Anderson and the centre-backs, they will create; if City screen him, United’s supply narrows quickly.

3. Doku out, O’Reilly back

Jérémy Doku is the only confirmed absentee for City, still recovering from the calf injury picked up in the Community Shield, and Maresca has confirmed Nico O’Reilly is fully fit again after a back problem. That likely returns O’Reilly to the left side of City’s attack and leaves Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden as the wide options either side of Haaland. Enzo Fernández is in line for his first Manchester derby.

4. United’s casualty list is long, and it is mostly in midfield

Carlos Baleba (ankle), Manuel Ugarte (cruciate), Amad Diallo (muscle), Matthijs de Ligt (back) and Tom Heaton are all unavailable, with Luke Shaw a doubt after missing the midweek game. Four of those five are midfielders or defenders, which compresses Carrick’s options in exactly the area where City are strongest. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are the probable pairing.

Neither side had confirmed a starting XI at the time of writing. The selections below follow the projected elevens published by FotMob and Khel Now, cross-checked against Blue Moon MCFC; all three name the same City eleven. Treat both as provisional.

Key Battle: Fernandes Between the Lines

Strip the occasion away and this is a fairly legible tactical question. United, at home, will want the ball in the final third often enough to feed a striker whose confidence is returning. City, with four clean sheets in four, will want to compress the middle and release Semenyo and Foden into the space behind United’s full-backs. The pivot of the whole thing is whether Fernandes gets time on the ball in the pocket between Anderson and City’s centre-backs.

United’s counter-weight is that Old Trafford has been an awkward place for City recently — they lost 2-0 here in January — and that their own attacking numbers are not the problem. Seven goals in three league games would be a respectable return for most sides. Stopping them is where the work is.
