Rennes vs Marseille Preview: Genesio Returns to Roazhon Park With OM Already Short of Room for Error

Matchday 4 is far too early for a season to be decided, but Friday night in Brittany has a way of setting the tone for both of these clubs. Rennes are fifth, unbeaten, and doing it by scoring for fun — seven goals in three games, with Estéban Lepaul already matching last season's early pace. Marseille are tenth with three points from three, have lost their last two, and arrive without the midfield screen that Bruno Génésio built his pre-season around. Rennes have taken seven points from a start that included Paris Saint-Germain, and none of the three results looked the same. They drew 2-2 with the champions at home on 23 August, then won 3-2 against Le Mans on 30 August, then won 2-1 away at Angers on 6 September with two early goals. Franck Haise's side have now gone six competitive matches unbeaten at Roazhon Park, and they are doing it with a front foot that borders on reckless: seven goals scored, five conceded, and a full-back pairing that joins the attack at every opportunity.

Marseille opened with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg on 21 August and have not won since. A 2-0 defeat at Monaco followed, then a 2-3 home loss to Paris FC in which they led and then unravelled. Five goals conceded in two matches is the number that matters, because Génésio has lost the two players he intended to use as the shield in front of that back line. With a Europa League trip to Besiktas and a home game against PSG to come in the next ten days, this is the kind of fixture where a manager starts calculating.

Head-to-Head: Marseille Have Owned It Lately — Just Not Always Here

Marseille have won four of the last five meetings between these clubs, including both games last season by three goals. The exception is the one that matters most for Friday: a 1-0 Rennes win at Roazhon Park in August 2025. Across those five fixtures Marseille scored 13 and conceded five.

Four Things to Watch in Rennes

1. Lepaul against a makeshift screen

Estéban Lepaul scored 21 league goals last season and has three in three this time, and he is not doing it from the edge of the box — he is the focal point of a side that arrives in numbers, with Ludovic Blas and Sebastian Szymanski operating behind him. Marseille, meanwhile, are without Geoffrey Kondogbia (thigh, expected out until October) and Tochukwu Nnadi (knee), so Pierre-Emile Højbjerg takes on far more defensive responsibility than he would want next to Himad Abdelli. If Rennes can isolate the middle of the pitch, Lepaul gets the sort of service he has been eating all month.

2. Rongier against his old club

Valentin Rongier captained Marseille and now anchors this Rennes midfield after leaving last summer. Friday is his first meeting with them. His role is the pivot that lets Haise push both full-backs on at once, which also means the space in front of Rennes' centre-backs is exactly where Marseille will try to transition.

3. Génésio's return

Génésio coached Rennes from 2021 to 2023, the period in which the club became a regular European qualifier, and he is coming back to the ground where that work happened with a team that has lost two in a row. The tactical detail worth watching is what he asks of Igor Paixão and Angel Gomes without the ball: both tuck in to support Amine Gouiri centrally in a 4-2-3-1 shape, and that narrowing is what stops Rennes playing through the press.

4. The right-back problem at both ends

Timothy Weah is projected to start at right-back for Marseille — an attacking player by trade, and the flank Rennes are most likely to target with a high full-back of their own. It cuts both ways: Weah going forward leaves space behind him for Mousa Tamari, and Rennes have conceded five already because they take exactly those risks.

Key Battle: Rennes' Rest Defence vs Marseille's Transitions

There are two ways this game goes. If Rennes commit both full-backs, push Blas and Szymanski high and squeeze Marseille into their own third, they can score two or three — but they leave around 40 metres of unprotected grass behind their midfield, and Marseille's best route to a goal has always been the fast break into wide channels from a regained ball. Gomes and Højbjerg against Szymanski and Rongier is where that gets decided.

The other consideration is the calendar. Marseille go to Besiktas in the Europa League next, then host PSG. Génésio may settle for a quiet 0-0 shape in the first 20 minutes and see what he has left late. Rennes, at home and unbeaten, will not.
