Arsenal vs Chelsea Preview: Perfect Records Collide at the Emirates
Four teams still have a perfect record after two rounds of the new Premier League season. Two of them meet on Sunday evening in north London. Arsenal have not conceded a goal all season; Chelsea have scored more than anyone. The first London derby of 2026/27 doubles as the first real examination of both.
Control Against Chaos
Manchester City, Hull City, Arsenal and Chelsea are the only sides with six points from six, and the two teams on show at the Emirates have collected theirs in completely opposite ways. Arsenal began their title defence with a 3-0 dismissal of Coventry, then won 1-0 at Aston Villa through a Bukayo Saka strike just before the hour, met from Riccardo Calafiori's low cross. Two games, four goals scored, none conceded, and the league's best defensive numbers: eleven shots faced, a single effort on target, and an expected-goals-against figure of just 0.54.
Chelsea, under Xabi Alonso, have been the division's great entertainment. A 3-2 win at Fulham was followed by a 4-3 home thriller against Brighton in which Roméo Lavia, Pedro Neto, João Pedro and Cole Palmer all scored. Their seven goals lead the league — and so, less gloriously, do the five they have conceded. Remarkably, the Blues scored inside the opening four minutes in both of those league games, a feat no team had managed since Bolton in 2002/03. They have also kept just one clean sheet in their last 18 league matches.
Head-to-Head: Arsenal's Recent Grip on the Derby
| Date | Result | Competition / Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mar 2026 | Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea | Premier League · Emirates |
| 3 Feb 2026 | Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea | League Cup SF · Emirates |
| 14 Jan 2026 | Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal | League Cup SF · Stamford Bridge |
| 30 Nov 2025 | Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal | Premier League · Stamford Bridge |
| 16 Mar 2025 | Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea | Premier League · Emirates |
That is four wins and a draw from the last five meetings, 7-4 on aggregate, and Arsenal are without defeat in the last eight league meetings between the clubs (five wins, three draws). Across 215 all-time meetings Arsenal lead 87-66 with 62 draws, and they have won 52 of 104 played at the Emirates. Chelsea have not won in this fixture since before the current campaign began — the evidence of the last two seasons points one way.
Four Things to Watch in North London
1. Can anyone breach Arsenal's wall?
Since the start of March, Arsenal have kept eight clean sheets in the league — three more than any other side — and they have scored in eighteen straight Premier League games. Sunday brings the sharpest possible stress test: Chelsea have scored inside four minutes in consecutive league matches, and early goals change everything about how the hosts can play. If the wall holds for the first quarter of an hour, Arsenal's control tends to do the rest.
2. Midfield injuries bite on both sides
Declan Rice, Cristhian Mosquera and Bruno Guimarães all face late fitness tests for the hosts after knocks against Villa, with William Saliba out long term and Jurriën Timber racing back from a groin problem. Chelsea's situation is worse: Moisés Caicedo is out after aggravating an injury against Brighton, Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra are unavailable, and Enzo Fernández was sold to Manchester City on deadline day. Roméo Lavia, so good going forward against Brighton, will have to anchor the middle almost alone.
3. Saka against Chelsea's fragile left side
Saka has two goals in two games and a habit of deciding this derby. Standing in his path is likely to be Jorrel Hato at left wing-back, in front of a back three that has kept one clean sheet in eighteen matches. The duel matters twice over: it is Arsenal's most reliable source of chances, and it pins Chelsea's most attack-minded wide player into his own half.
4. Palmer's half-century, Martínez's return
Cole Palmer sits on 49 Premier League goals for Chelsea and could reach fifty in his ninety-ninth appearance for the club — a landmark goal at the Emirates would be some way to announce Alonso's new era. At the other end, Emiliano Martínez returns to the stadium where he made his name, now in Chelsea colours and expecting a frosty reception, with his shot-stopping likely to be the busier of the two goalkeepers on the day's evidence.
Predicted Lineups
Arsenal
- Raya
- White, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori
- Rice, Lewis-Skelly
- Saka, Ødegaard, Eze
- Havertz
Rice, Mosquera and Guimarães are late calls after knocks at Villa Park; Mosquera missed Thursday training. Timber is back in full training and could make the squad. Saliba remains out with a back injury. Eze is pushing Tzolis for a first start of the season on the left.
Chelsea
- Martínez
- Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill
- Neto, Lavia, Gusto, Hato
- Palmer, Rogers
- João Pedro
Caicedo is out, Henderson (wrist) and Palestra are sidelined, and Enzo Fernández has left for Manchester City — Lavia anchors the midfield alongside Gusto. João Pedro, scorer, provider and own-goal victim against Brighton, leads the line again.
Key Battle: Saka vs Hato
Strip the derby noise away and this is the matchup that decides the afternoon. Saka's cut inside onto his left foot has beaten better resourced defences than Chelsea's current back three, and Calafiori's overlaps create the low crosses that produced the Villa winner. Chelsea's answer is likely to be Hato's aggression plus a tucked-in Lacroix — but every time the visitors' wing-backs push up, the space behind them is exactly where Ødegaard and Saka live. If Chelsea double-team Saka successfully, the release valve is Gabriel on set pieces; if they don't, the league's best attack meets its leakiest defence with predictable results.
The counter-punch runs through Palmer drifting into the right half-space against Rice's replacement zone. Chelsea have scored first in both league games this season and have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their last four league matches. Whatever else happens, an early Chelsea goal turns this from a chess match into a street fight.
