Two Relegated Sides, Two Very Different Autumns

Relegation was supposed to be a shared experience. Instead, four months after both clubs dropped out of the top flight, only one of them looks like a side intending to go straight back up.

Wolves have taken seven points from their opening three league fixtures and sit second, level on points with Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers and a point behind early leaders Charlton Athletic. Their 4-1 win at home to Stoke City on Saturday was their third straight victory in all competitions, and they have now gone five matches without defeat. Nine goals in three league games is the most productive return in the division, spread across Raúl Jiménez, Fer López and Rodrigo Gomes, who have two apiece, with López also laying on two assists.

West Ham, by contrast, are winless in three. They have drawn 2-2 at Burnley, lost 1-2 at home to Charlton Athletic and drawn 1-1 at Watford on Saturday, leaving them 19th on two points. The underlying numbers say they are better than that — they generated around 3.0 expected goals in the Charlton defeat and held 62% of the ball at Vicarage Road — but a first clean sheet of the season still has not arrived, and five goals conceded in three matches is the real problem.

There is, at least, evidence that the attack works. Nuno Espírito Santo's side put four past Southampton in the second round of the EFL Cup, with a brace from Joshua Ajala plus goals from Valentín Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen, following a 3-1 win over Portsmouth in the previous round. The task now is to carry that into a league fixture that already feels important in early September.

West Ham hold the edge across the full historical record, but the recent picture is far tighter — and notably, none of the last five meetings have finished level. Both clubs won their own home fixture in the Premier League last season, and both kept a clean sheet doing it. That is the pattern the hosts will be clinging to on Tuesday.

Four Talking Points

1. Wolves are scoring freely — with a patched-up back line

César Peixoto's side have found the net at least twice in every match during their five-game unbeaten run. Doing it without several first-choice defenders is the impressive part. Kieran Trippier is out with a knee injury until late September and Yerson Mosquera is sidelined with a thigh problem on a similar timeline, while Rafiki Saïd is nursing a muscle injury. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Ladislav Krejčí have also been absent, and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is a doubt with a shoulder issue.

2. West Ham's finishing, not their football, is the issue

The 62% possession at Watford and the volume of chances created against Charlton point to a side that is controlling matches without converting them. Joël Piroe is averaging around four shots on target per match and got off the mark in the recent run; if the Hammers turn even half of those opportunities into goals, the table looks very different very quickly. The concern at the other end is real, though: no shut-out yet, and a defence that has already been breached five times.

3. Deadline-day noise around the London Stadium

This fixture falls on transfer deadline day, and that matters for the home side. Edson Álvarez, Soungoutou Magassa and Jean-Clair Todibo have all been linked with moves away and are unlikely to feature, which removes options from an already thin squad. Tomáš Souček remains out with a thigh injury and is not expected back until mid-September. Konstantinos Mavropanos missed the Watford draw with a dead leg but is in contention to return.

4. A sold-out away end and a big-stage feel

Wolves have taken a sold-out allocation of almost 3,000 supporters to east London, and a 62,500-seat stadium for a second-tier fixture in early September is a fair illustration of what this division has gained from last season's relegations. Lewis Smith takes charge. For a West Ham side still searching for rhythm, a full away end is either fuel or pressure — which one depends entirely on the first twenty minutes.

Predicted Lineups

West Ham United

4-4-1-1
  • Hermansen
  • Veltman, Mavropanos, Kilman, Walker-Peters
  • Bowen, Engels, Kanté, Solomon
  • Mukasa
  • Castellanos

Mavropanos is expected to return at centre-back after missing the trip to Watford; if he is not risked, Airidas Golambeckis keeps the shirt. Piroe and Pablo Felipe push for involvement from the bench.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

4-2-3-1
  • Tchatchoua, Djiga, Toti, Bueno
  • Munetsi, André
  • Rodrigo Gomes, Fer López, Mané
  • Jiménez

This is the side that beat Stoke 4-1. Jordan James scored after coming on at the weekend and is pushing for a starting role; with Trippier and Mosquera out, the back four is likely to stay as it is.

Key Battle: Jarrod Bowen vs Hugo Bueno

West Ham's most reliable outlet is still Bowen down the right. He scored in the 4-1 win at Southampton and has been their brightest attacking presence across the opening weeks, and with the hosts likely to see plenty of the ball again, he should get chances to isolate his full-back.

Hugo Bueno is the man tasked with stopping him. The Wolves left-back has been part of a defence that has conceded four in three league games despite the team's unbeaten start, and he will be asked to defend one-versus-one far more often than he would like. If Bowen wins that duel early, Wolves' centre-backs — already short of their first-choice pairing — are in for a long night. If Bueno holds, the visitors' counter-attacking shape becomes very hard to break down.

FAQ

What time does West Ham vs Wolves kick off?
19:45 BST on Tuesday 1 September 2026, at the London Stadium in east London.
Where can I watch the match?
UK viewers can watch live on Sky Sports+. In the United States the game is available on Paramount+.
Why are West Ham and Wolves in the Championship?
Both clubs were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2025/26 season and are now competing in the EFL Championship. They met twice in the top flight last season, with each side winning at home.
Who is injured for this match?
West Ham are without Tomáš Souček (thigh, until mid-September), while Konstantinos Mavropanos is a doubt after a dead leg. Wolves are missing Kieran Trippier (knee), Yerson Mosquera (thigh) and Rafiki Saïd (muscle), with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Ladislav Krejčí and Sam Johnstone also carrying problems.
Prediction. The form book points one way: Wolves are unbeaten, scoring for fun, and facing a side yet to win in the league. But West Ham have dominated possession in every match so far, won this fixture 4-0 last season, and have a stadium this size to lean on. Expect the visitors to be given a real test before their extra cutting edge tells — a narrow away win, with goals at both ends, feels the likeliest outcome.
