Our Take: What the 36-Team Table Really Changes
The group stage is gone. For 2026/27 every club sits in one table and plays eight matches — two opponents drawn from each of the four pots, four at home and four away. In practice, that means no more "easy group": a heavyweight still has to go to a fourth-pot side on a cold away night, and a debutant gets a marquee home fixture it can actually build a season around.
The other change worth knowing is the middle of the table. Finish in the top eight and you skip a round entirely. Finish 9th to 24th and you face a two-legged play-off in February, which is where squads get stretched. For supporters, it simply means more meaningful matchdays between September and January.
